Johann Kulik Cello, Prague 1850

Discover the exquisite craftsmanship of Johann (Johannes) Kulik, renowned as one of the preeminent violin makers of 19th-century Prague. Trained under the tutelage of Schembera in Prague and Martin Stoss in Vienna, Kulik's legacy is marked by unparalleled skill and dedication to his craft.

Kulik's instruments are a testament to his mastery, characterized by stunning scrolls and meticulously selected materials that exude elegance. The varnish, though thick and durable, retains a remarkable transparency, allowing the natural beauty of the wood to shine through. With a discerning eye for quality, Kulik consistently chose the finest woods for his creations.

Inspired by the works of esteemed Italian makers such as Antonio Stradivari, Joseph Guarneri filius Andreae, Pietro Guarneri, and Giovanni Paolo Maggini, Kulik crafted his instruments based on their esteemed models. Following his fervent admiration for Andrea Guarneri after 1850, Kulik predominantly emulated the style of his revered master, resulting in instruments of unparalleled excellence.

Notable for their association with nobility, some of Kulik's finest creations proudly display coats of arms, evidence of commissions from esteemed patrons. Among his proteges, J.B. Dvorak stands out alongside Josef Barchanek as chief disciples, furthering Kulik's legacy through their own contributions to the art of violin making.
