Larsen Sovereign Cello String Set

Sovereign is Larsen's most soloistic cello set, and the point of buying it as a set rather than piecing it together is consistency. Each string was engineered for its specific job, but they were voiced against each other — so the transition from C to A is seamless instead of feeling like four separate strings that happen to be on the same instrument. That even feel under the bow is the thing players notice first, and it's the argument for the full set over a mixed setup.

The A and D use a solid steel core with stainless steel winding. The A has a warm, focused voice rather than a bright or wiry one, and the intonation stays stable — a real consideration on a string that lives high in the register and shows every flaw. The G and C are built on flexible steel rope cores with high-density tungsten windings, delivering weight and darkness down low without the stiffness a heavy bottom end usually brings.

What sets Sovereign apart from Larsen's Original range is definition. The sound speaks immediately and cleanly. Short strokes, fast passagework, and off-the-string playing come across articulated rather than blurred, and the set holds its shape at volume instead of spreading. There's a wide color range available too — genuine grit and growl when you dig in, and a clean pianissimo when you don't.

This is a professional set. It's a strong fit for advancing high school and university cellists, chamber and orchestral players, and soloists. It does the most good on instruments that need help projecting, and on players who are being asked to carry a line rather than blend into one. If you're currently running a Larsen A and D with tungsten lower strings from another maker, Sovereign is essentially the fully engineered version of that setup.

Offered in medium tension only — there is no light or strong option in the Sovereign range.
